Two days travel diary to Kolkatta:
We head from the Airport to the nearest metro station which is Dum Dum Junction.
To reach Dum Dum Junction you can get a taxi just outside the Airport; a mere 10 minutes drive takes you to the metro station.
We catch the metro for Kalightat Station where we reach to our hotel which is right opposite to Kalighat Temple and a 5 minute drive from metro station.
After unloading our luggage at the hotel and with a map in our end we first visit the Kalighat Temple and then head back to Metro Station to reach Espalanade Metro Station.
We embark upon our walking trail for the City Visit:
1. Victoria Memorial: The Iconic building of the City which revisits the British era.
2. Raj Bhavan: The place houses the governor of Bengal.
3. Town Hall: The attraction here is the location of the Calcutta High court
4. Fort William: An British era citadel with am impressive architecture
5. General Post Office: An iconic building in its own right worth a visit for its marvellous structure.
6. Howrah Bridge: Your visit to Kolkatta is incomplete if you have not seen this water front which has the city of Howrah at one end and City of Kolkatta at the other end.
7. Birla Planetarium: Adjacent to the Victoria Memorial; it has astronomical gallery which houses celestial model and deals with various aspects of astro physics and stars and planets.
I attended the English Show which starts at 6:30 p.m.; the shows are also available in Hindi and Bengali.
Duration is about two hours and costs around INR 40.
After the show we head back to our hotel this time in Bus and then have a dinner at a nearby hotel.
Day Two:
Since we go about three hours of travel time to explore the city before be catch our flight we check out from our hotel and head for science city which is enroute to the airport.
The Main attractions here are:
Dyna motion Hall: where you unravel scientific principles in form of user friendly activities.
Evolution Hall: A pre historic themed which covers various facets of dinosaurs.
Maritime Centre: Has exhibits on the shipping and navigation systems and also depicts maritime history of India.
Earth exploration Hall: A two storey building that depicts wonderful features of both southern and northern hemisphere and exploits audio video technologies to help better understand our planet.
Space Odyssey: Some major attractions are time machine, a 3D theatre and mirror magic.
Its a wonderful experience to visit the science city (even if you are not particularly interested in science).
Science City is open from 9:00 a.m to 9:00 p.m. It remains open on Sundays and Public holidays.
